Netflix has been dominating the game, and since we have seen a number of apps and services try and copy their style. But we can now add one other company to that list, Google.
An update to Google’s Movies and Play app, the app used to consume the movies and tv shows you buy or rent from the Google Play Store, now looks a little different. When you sign in, members will be greeted with the option to add services from other companies, including Amazon Prime, HBO, Showtime, and more.
The new combined look will group shows and suggested shows into categories based on movies you have watched before. There are even options to watch movies or shows via Crackle or Tubi TV (services that offer content for free at the expense of ads).
The design is different and more of a way to provide combined content in one location. If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish they would allow saved shows via Youtube TV as an option. Because right now if I wanted to watch something like Black Lightning (a show that I have the entire season saved via Youtube TV), I would have to either install the CW app or buy the season via Google Play.
Right now I am liking the look and hope to see it evolve over time. Will this be enough to help Google compete with Netflix, doubt it. But it will provide cord cutters another avenue to help them get over big cable.
