The public already has a displaced trust with technology. The question gets asked “what happens when..”, only for them to be told “that” could never happen. But what happens when it does?

It looks as if people’s fears are coming to past. There is a report that LocationSmart’s website allowed customers’ cellphone locations to be accessed without their permission. This is an issue for because the companies who’s data are collected are AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

A person could simply type in a number, wait for the person to reply yes, and then get the location of the cell phone. This could effect over 200 million people in the US and bring up the reality that customers continue to give up more of their private information to companies not capable of completely protecting it.

We are on the edge of the era of IOT (connected appliances, homes, and devices). And if companies do not do a better job protecting customer information we may open ourselves up to other dangers ahead. Cars stolen, houses broken into, and sensitive information sold all to the dark web. Just imagine a connected car hacked with the assailant threatening to crash it if their requests were not met. A family with kids in the back seat may feel helpless. A farfetched scenario that could soon be plausible.

What does this do for your confidence in companies keeping your information private?
